The Mark Hopkins Hotel, named after a founder of the Central Pacific Railroad, completed a $50 million renovation in August 2000. This grand historic hotel sits atop San Francisco's Nob Hill, once known as the Hill of Palaces and the original site of a Victorian mansion built by Mark Hopkins in 1878. The Hopkins family's 40-room palace was destroyed by the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906. Twenty years later, the 19-story Mark Hopkins Hotel opened.
